WHAT IS REFINED SHEA BUTTER?

Shea Butter comes in two forms: Refined and Unrefined. Both refined and unrefined have excellent moisturizing properties but the refined has little or no healing properties compared with the unrefined shea butter. Refined Shea butter is also called ultra refined. Unrefined shea butter is also referred to as “unrefined”, “raw”, “crude” or “virgin” shea butter.

SHEA BUTTER REFINING:

After the extraction of the virgin shea butter there are various options for modifying which is referred to as refining. Every stage of refining takes natural ingredients, usually unfit for human consumption out of the shea butter. The refining process then introduces harmful refining chemicals as catalysts, which have to be removed at the end of the process by re-fining.

Traditional and organic forms of processing hold an important market niche for the ever-increasing demand for natural and organic products. The four major processes for modifying or refining crude or virgin shea butter are:

  • De-gumming
  • Neutralization
  • Bleaching
  • Deodorization
